Eats/Drinks/Dancing

The Effra Social, Brixton.

I've found a new favourite haunt. Tucked away behind the hustle and bustle of Brixton sits The Effra Social.

An ex Conservative club, that from the outside, looks no great shakes. To be fair, it looks like an abandoned house. But step up the bright blue steps into a bar that time forgot. The doors to this fantastic old club have been unlocked, the leatherette chairs have been dusted down and the stage has been given a spring clean. Before you know it, you're head's in a spin, you've been out spending your rations in the market & your chuffed because your hubby made it home from the war!

Add a few touches of bunting and washing lines of music paper to the mix, and here we have the epitome of 1950's revival. I want to don my black fur coat, sip on a G&T and pretend that I'm my Nan at a dance.

The staff are beyond chirpy. A phenomenal doorman by the name of Chucksy tops my list of all time favourite people. The jive bands/live music/general ditties are very fitting to the feel of the place and to my complete shock & surprise, the drinks are reasonably priced.

By day it plays host to craft fairs such as The Turpentine Takeover, showcasing the works of the designers/makers/crafters of Brixton. Quaint little stalls are lined up in the lower bar for you to peruse whilst sipping on a pint. How else do you want to spend your Saturdays?

Another one to add to my list of favourite pubs. And to my pleasure, I find out today it has run by the revolutionary Antic group, who can claim the Balham Bowling Club & Westow House as some of their best creations. Hurrah!

I would recommend the Social to anyone in Brixton, or outside of it for that matter, and although I didn't get a chance to try it, the brunch is meant to be out of this world!

Happy Pinting.
